Environment

We are green

Our earth – our shared planet

Protecting the environment is one of the key challenges of the 21st century and requires decisive and responsible action from everyone – especially businesses. As a company that is deeply embedded in economic and social structures, we have considerable leverage and take the resulting responsibility seriously.

We see the protection of natural resources and the reduction of environmental impact not only as an obligation, but as a fundamental part of our corporate philosophy and our actions. In doing so, we consider the entire value chain – from the procurement and processing of raw materials to production and the use and recycling of our products.

“Creating maximum added value ith minimum use of resources – that is our goal!”

Jörg Rottmann
Head of Materials Management/Logistics

Emissions

Alignment with the 1.5 °C targets

We have made a conscious commitment to do our part to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. This commitment is not only part of our strategy, but also a key benchmark against which we measure our progress. Achieving this goal requires profound changes – from reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to transforming our supply chains.

In line with our values, we prefer to tackle the causes ourselves rather than shifting the challenge to others. In doing so, we focus on concrete reductions and systematic improvements.

Greenhouse Protocol

Emissions caused by business activities are quantified in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidelines.

Alternative heat generation

In addition to the consistent electrification of heat generation, we are also considering the reuse of waste heat from our presses.

Climate-neutral electricity

We rely 100% on climate-neutral energy from hydropower and our own photovoltaic system.

Energy supply

A reliable and sustainable energy supply is essential for our operations.

We have been using photovoltaics (PV) since 2006 and have generated a considerable amount of energy ourselves since then. In 2024, our PV system produced a total of 125,880 KWh of electricity, and we cover our remaining electricity needs by purchasing climate-neutral hydroelectric power.

We are currently facing an important step: the repowering of our PV system. Thanks to the technical advances of recent years, we expect to be able to achieve significantly higher yields in the future with modernised modules and systems.

Resource utilisation

Certified environmental management for 20 years

Our plastics are high-quality materials that are manufactured using a great deal of energy and resources. It therefore goes without saying that we take care to use them sparingly every day and consistently recycle any leftovers in closed cycles.

Optimised cutting

The material flow in our machining process is optimised to waste as little material as possible.

Resuable wooden crates

We use a return concept for our wooden crates and packaging materials in shipping.

Internal cycle

We return scraps and shavings to the semi-finished product production line in a closed cycle, where they are pressed back into boards.

Internal recycling

Despite a wide range of measures to increase material utilisation, we inevitably have to accept that ‘you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs.’ In order to make use of these unavoidable residues, internal recycling has been standard practice at our company for many years.

The chips and scraps from our materials that are produced during the manufacturing process are sorted by type and reused for the production of regenerated materials. This allows us to avoid waste and reduce the consumption of raw materials.

Manufacturing technologies, materials and products

At MURTFELDT, our understanding of sustainability and the environment is not limited to our production processes and locations. We also want our products to make a positive contribution. Specifically, we want to make a difference where our plastics are used: in our customers' machines, systems and processes.

Our materials and solutions are designed not only to function effectively, but also to actively reduce environmental impact – through greater efficiency, longer service life and lower energy consumption. Together with our customers, we are working towards a common goal: to build better machines that harmonise technology and the environment.

Sustainability Report 2025/26

A sustainability report is an important step in demonstrating what we are already doing. We want to be completely transparent, seek external feedback, encourage dialogue and inspire other stakeholders.
