Murtfeldt’s application tip!
Standardised resistance measurement
ATEX-compliant plastics according to Directive 94/9/EC.
Murtfeldt’s dissipative plastics help to prevent or minimise charges, and enable even discharges in various work areas that require special protection. Costly damages to electronic components and dust explosions can be avoided as a result.
There are several effective countermeasures to prevent sudden discharges, or dust explosions, from causing costly damage to electronic components and assemblies.
Murtfeldt’s dissipative plastics contribute to making work environments safe by:
1.Preventing charges or minimising them by dissipation
2.Enabling an even discharge.
However, customers often don't recognise whether the material supplied by Murtfeldt is dissipative when it is delivered, as there isn't always a difference in appearance, e.g. original material "S" plus+® white ESD compared to original material "S"® natural.
It is therefore essential to always carry out a standardised resistance measurement on receipt of goods or later in production. This requires the use of a suitable measuring device with measuring probes, which measure across the surface. The right test voltage has to be set for this.
If test tips are used instead, an incorrect and misleading result of "insulating" might be displayed, as the measurement only relates to a particular spot.
Note on the images:The three measurements shown below were taken using the same sample and reflect a slight difference in measurement results.
Don't have a suitable measuring device at your disposal?Murtfeldt will gladly provide you with a test certificate specific to your order at your request. Please let us know if you require one when placing your order.
How to measure the right way
Wrong way (with tips)
Voltage >250V ; probe tips
Result: 1.97GOhm
➔ insulating
Right way I (with resistance measurement device)
Voltage >250V ; resistance measurement device
Result: 6MOhm
➔ dissipative
Right way II (with probes)
Voltage >250V ; probes
Result: 9.79MOhm
➔ dissipative
